AI Context Window

Definition

The context window is the maximum amount of text an AI model can process in a single interaction, measured in tokens. A larger context window allows the model to consider more documents, longer contracts, or more extensive case histories simultaneously, which directly impacts the quality and completeness of its legal analysis.

Every AI model has a finite context window, the total amount of text it can hold in memory during a single conversation or query. Early models had windows of a few thousand tokens (roughly a few pages of text), while modern models can handle hundreds of thousands of tokens (equivalent to a full-length novel or a substantial set of legal documents).

For legal work, context window size is a practical constraint. Analyzing a 50-page contract requires a model that can hold the entire document in context simultaneously. Comparing multiple agreements, reviewing deposition transcripts, or conducting comprehensive research on a legal issue all demand large context windows. When a model's context window is too small, it either truncates the input (losing potentially critical information) or processes documents in chunks that prevent it from seeing cross-references and patterns.

However, context window size alone does not determine quality. A model with a million-token window but poor attention mechanisms may still miss details buried in the middle of a long document. The most effective legal AI systems combine large context windows with intelligent retrieval to ensure the most relevant information is prominently positioned.

How Irys approaches this

Irys supports extended context windows and pairs them with intelligent retrieval so that the most relevant portions of large document sets are prioritized for analysis.
